Q. How often are grants awarded?

A. Grants will be awarded on an annual basis, typically in October of each year.

Q. What are the grant amounts?

A. It is anticipated that the foundation will make gifts each year to a variety of non-profit organizations operating in our communities. Currently, this includes San Diego, Orange County and the Bay Area.  

The financial amount of our grants and scholarships vary depending on funds made available through fundraising efforts. Grant amounts are partially based on the need of the beneficiary.

It is hoped that as the foundation grows, we will be able to increase the amount of charitable giving we do each year.

Q. How many organizations will receive grants annually?

A. Grant recipients will vary year over year, depending on funds raised and the needs of the community. In the Foundation’s first grant cycle, 12 beneficiaries received a total of $ 180,000 of grants ranging in amounts from $5,000 to $50,000.

Q. How can a non-profit apply?

A. Organizations need to be nominated by a current Barney & Barney associate. Each year, associates will be invited to nominate a qualifying organization to receive a grant. 

Q. Who are the recipients of Barney & Barney Foundation grants?

A: Our goal is to contribute to community organizations that assist those in need, support our youth, advance the arts and protect the environment.

Q. How are beneficiaries chosen?

A. Each year, Barney & Barney will solicit grant applications from local non-profit organizations which are nominated and approved by our associates. The Foundation Committee will review all grant applications and make a recommendation to the Board of Directors for approval. , narrowing the candidates to 2-3 per area of focus (e.g., supporting youth and community, arts or the environment). We find that this process allows us to recognize the overall merits and qualifications of each applicant, and ensures distribution of grants are in line with the Foundation’s mission statement and goals.

The Foundation is committed to supporting a variety of deserving causes, and it is our intention to select different charities year over year.

Q: What are the criteria for selection?

A: We look for non-profit organizations that either assist underserved communities, support our youth, work to protect the environment or promote the arts.
